How can someone become possessed by a spirit?

Artwork

Have you ever seen a ghost, felt an unexplained presence, or walked through a house that sent chills down your spine for no reason at all? Maybe it was a shadow moving just out of sight, whispers in an empty room, or dreams that felt too real to ignore. These experiences aren’t just stories for movies—they’re often the first signs of something deeper, something spiritual. In some cases, they’re the earliest warnings of possession, but how does possession actually happen? Why are some people more vulnerable than others?

Spirits are naturally drawn to individuals with weak or fragile spiritual energy. Those who are more vulnerable to external influences—especially those plagued by vivid or disturbing dreams, emotional exhaustion, or chronic stress—are easier targets. Stress, in particular, weakens the mind, and spirits sense this vulnerability. Over time, they erode mental resilience, slowly wearing a person down until they can slip in. There’s a reason liquor is called “spirits”—dull awareness opens gateways and makes the mind easier to influence.

Imagine your mind and spirit as grains of rice inside a bowl. The rice represents your essence; the bowl is your body. When someone is frequently affected by spiritual encounters, they lose a grain of rice each time. Slowly, grain by grain, they’re depleted. Spirits are patient—they have all the time in the world. What they crave is life, and every interaction chips away at your sense of self. Eventually, some are left with nothing but the casing: the body, empty.

An empty casing is a blank slate—unable to resist, easy to mold. It becomes whatever another entity decides it should be. This marks the beginning of a parasitic relationship. Before reaching this point, many people seek help. They go to doctors saying they hear voices or feel watched. The typical response? “It’s just your imagination. Take this medication.” And so begins the spiral into what society calls madness.

Not everyone experiences these things. Many people have strong spirits, so they see and feel little to nothing from the other side. Those who don’t sense anything often dismiss others as delusional. However, spiritual sensitivity varies. Some people cannot safely own antique items like paintings, decor, knives, or weapons—objects that may carry lingering energies. Those who can, and feel nothing, believe others are simply imagining things. If you know you’re spiritually sensitive or vulnerable, you avoid secondhand items unless they come from someone you trust deeply.

In my family, my mother and uncle are two people who seem completely untouched by spirits. Wherever they walk, the ground seems sanctified—like walking on salt. They remain protected. I, however, wasn’t blessed the same way. I see them. I speak with them. I dream of them and yet, they haven’t broken me.

There is a path to spiritual strength. Anyone can rebuild their inner self through long-term spiritual discipline. Chanting to Buddha for years, with consistency and sincerity, can fortify the spirit. It replenishes your grains of rice and strengthens your bowl, allowing you to walk through any space—no matter how dark—and remain at peace. In time, that very soil beneath your feet will feel holy.

If you’ve ever felt a sense or heard things that others don’t, please know you’re not crazy — and you’re definitely not alone.

In the end, whether you believe in spirits, energies, or simply trust your instincts—awareness is your first line of defense. Protect your space, honor your spiritual well-being, and listen to the signs your body and dreams may be giving you. Not everyone is affected the same way, but understanding the risks can help you stay grounded and strong. Again, be safe, stay open-minded, and take care of yourself—mind, body, and spirit.
